Light entrepreneurship brings flexibility to combining studies and work
Alvar, a 25-year-old student from Helsinki, found light entrepreneurship to be the best way to combine his studies with seasonal work in a ski shop. Flexibility, ease, and reliability made invoicing a natural choice, bringing freedom to daily life and financial security.
Alvar is a 25-year-old student from Helsinki who has managed to combine work and studies in a flexible way.
He studies economics at Hanken and works alongside his studies in a ski shop, where his tasks include store work and especially ski and equipment maintenance. The work is seasonal, typically running from autumn through Easter.
When Alvar started at his new workplace last year, he had the opportunity to choose between invoicing (as a light entrepreneur) or being on the payroll – he chose invoicing after some thought. Of the ten people in the work crew, about half invoice and the other half are employees.
“In the end the decision was easy: I chose invoicing”, Alvar says.

In Alvar’s view, light entrepreneurship is especially well suited to seasonal workers, students, and those who want to try another mode of working. As a light entrepreneur one can work exactly as much as suits one’s life situation.
In his current job invoicing has worked well, and his hope is to invoice for his work in the future as well.
“I believe that in the future, if I get the same opportunity to choose invoicing in some other job, I will likely choose it again.”
